ISO Week Numbers vs US Week Numbers: Why They Differ
"Week 1" is not a universal idea. Two common systems answer "what week is it?" differently, and around New Year they can disagree by a week — or by an entire year of labelling. Here is how each works.
A week number turns a date into a compact label like "week 30." It is everywhere: project schedules, payroll periods, manufacturing lot codes, academic calendars, and the little numbers down the side of a paper diary. The trouble is that there is more than one rule for assigning them, and the two you will meet most often — the ISO 8601 standard and the everyday US convention — are built on different choices.
Two choices define a week-numbering system
Every scheme has to answer two questions:
- Which day does a week start on? Monday and Sunday are the common answers.
- Which week gets to be week 1? The week containing January 1, or the first "full enough" week of the year.
Different answers to those two questions are the whole story.
The ISO 8601 system
ISO 8601 is the international standard, used across Europe, throughout industry, and by most software libraries and databases. Its rules are precise:
- Weeks start on Monday and end on Sunday.
- Week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday. An equivalent, easier-to-remember version: week 1 is the week that contains January 4.
- Another equivalent: week 1 is the first week with the majority of its days (at least four) in the new year.
Because the first week must be mostly inside the new year, the earliest days of January sometimes belong to the previous year's final week, and the last days of December sometimes belong to next year's week 1. ISO writes a week date as YYYY-Www, for example 2026-W30, and the year in that label is the "ISO week-year," which can differ from the calendar year by a day or two at each end.
The common US system
Most American wall calendars, planners, and spreadsheet formulas use a simpler convention:
- Weeks start on Sunday and end on Saturday.
- Week 1 is simply the week that contains January 1. So January 1 is always in week 1, and that first week is usually a short, partial week.
There is no "four-day" test and no borrowing across the year boundary: every date's week number belongs to its own calendar year. (Note that some specialised US systems differ again — the CDC's epidemiological "MMWR" weeks start on Sunday but use a four-day rule like ISO. When people say "US week number" in everyday use, they almost always mean the Sunday-start, week-of-January-1 version.)
A worked example across New Year
Watch what happens at the 2020–2021 boundary. In 2021, January 1 fell on a Friday.

Three things stand out. First, under ISO, January 1–3, 2021 still belong to 2020-W53, because that week has only three days in January — fewer than four — so it stays with the old year. Second, ISO week 1 of 2021 does not begin until Monday, January 4. Third, the US system has already rolled into week 2 by Sunday, January 3, because its weeks start a day earlier and its week 1 began on the first Sunday on or before January 1. For a stretch of days the two systems disagree not just on the week number but on the year.
Can a year have 53 weeks?
Yes, under ISO. A year has 53 ISO weeks when January 1 is a Thursday, or a Wednesday in a leap year; otherwise it has 52. That extra week is why long-range plans built on week numbers occasionally need an adjustment, and why "W53" is a real, if uncommon, label.
Which one should you use?
- Use ISO 8601 for anything technical, international, or shared across software: databases, APIs, manufacturing, logistics, and any European correspondence. Writing the full
2026-W30form removes all ambiguity. - Use the US convention when you are matching a printed American calendar or a colleague's spreadsheet that already uses Sunday-start weeks.
- Always say which system you mean near a year boundary. "Week 1" on January 2 could be this year or last year depending on the rule.
